This combined ritual represents the sacred spiritual core of the Hindu wedding.

Vivah Havan: Involves invoking Agni (fire) as a divine witness to the marriage. It purifies the union and aligns it with dharma, artha, kama, and moksha — the four aims of life.

Mangal Pheras (also called Saptapadi): The couple takes seven rounds around the fire, each symbolizing a unique marital vow — from nourishment and strength to love, fidelity, and lifelong friendship.

Together, these rituals legally and spiritually solemnize the marriage as per Vedic dharma.

What is the History?

This practice traces back to the Rigvedic period. In Vedic texts like the Gr̥hya Sūtras, marriage is described as a yajna (sacrifice), and the sacred fire (Agni) acts as the witness and purifier of the bond.

The Saptapadi is mentioned in the Shatapatha Brahmana and is still the most recognized and binding part of Hindu marriages.

Over centuries, these rituals evolved across regions but the Vivah Havan and Mangal Pheras have remained central in both North and South Indian weddings.
