History

Saraswati is mentioned in the Rigveda as the river goddess who later evolved into the goddess of wisdom and eloquence. In the Vasant Panchami tradition, devotees celebrate her appearance by placing books and instruments before her idol and abstaining from reading or working that day as a mark of reverence.
